Most patients will need to wear braces for around 18 to 24 months. However, there are cases that takes longer than 24 months to correct. On the other hand, if it's a simple fix, your treatment may be shorter than 18 months. Its best to ask your dentist as braces is not a one-size-fits-all solution and each smiles are unique.

Firstly, you'll need to come for a consultation, then take two (2) types of x-ray  (OPG & Lateral Cephalometric) and dental impression.  Usually, you will  need to do scaling, filling and also tooth extraction  if required. All in all, the consultation will take place before the start of any suggested treatment plan.

Other than conventional braces, there are self ligating braces, ceramic braces and also clear aligners (e.g. Invisalign, Zenyum, etc.)

With braces on, you'll need to be extra careful when brushing your teeth as this may damage your braces. Start by rinsing your mouth with water before brushing to loosen any food stuck around your braces and then floss your teeth.

Step 1:  Start by brushing your teeth at the gumline at a 45-degree angle.

Step 2:  Place the toothbrush on top of the bracket, angling down to brush on top of each bracket.

Step 3: Then reposition it to slowly brush the bottom of the bracket and the wire by angling the toothbrush up.

Step 4: Be sure to brush every tooth at the gumline and also above and below the brackets to help removes plaque and food debris.

You will need to consult your dentist first if you are planning to go on a long trip because if you are in an active phase during your treatment plan, your dentist will need to closely monitor your teeth progression as per agreed treatment plans.

Normally, you will need to wear retainers all day except during eating and brushing your teeth for about six (6) months, but in some cases for up to twelve (12) months or so.
